As we age, our lips undergo some changes that can affect their appearance and function. One of the most common concerns among older patients is the loss of lip volume and definition, which can make them look unhappy, tired or angry. In this blog post, we will discuss how dermal filler can help restore the natural shape and structure of the lips, as well as the psychological aspects of treating older lips.
The psychology of treating older lips is very important, as we want to respect the patient's identity and preferences. We do not want to create a look that is unnatural, exaggerated or out of sync with their facial features. We want to enhance their lips in a subtle and harmonious way, that makes them feel more confident and comfortable with their appearance.
The anatomy of the lips in older patients is different from younger ones, as they have experienced some changes due to ageing. One of these changes is the weakening of the depressor anguli oris muscle (triangularis muscle), which is responsible for pulling down the corners of the mouth. This can create a 'downturned mouth' effect, that gives a sad or bitter expression. Another change is the loss of collagen and elastin, which are the main components of the lip structure. This can cause the lips to become thinner, flatter and more involuted, meaning that they turn inwards and expose more of the white part of the lip.
The injection techniques for treating older lips are based on restoring the structure and volume of the lips, without overfilling or distorting them. The key is to use small amounts of filler and inject them in strategic points that support the lip shape and contour. We usually start by treating the structure of the lip first, such as the vermillion border, the philtrum and the cupid's bow. These areas help define the lip outline and create a more youthful and attractive appearance. Then, we think about adding volume to the body of the lip, especially in areas that have become hollow or sunken. We use a gentle and precise technique, that avoids creating lumps or bumps in the lip tissue. We always check with the patient during the procedure, to make sure they are happy with the results and adjust accordingly.
We want to go on a journey with the patient over time and achieve their desired outcome gradually and safely.
